Monica Bhide, author of cookbook – Modern Spice, Spice is Right and Easy Indian Cooking for today; She is multitalented writer and teacher for authentic Indian Cuisine. Even though she has lived outside India, her love for Indian food inspired her to learn Indian dishes from authentic and original Indian cooks – from the kitchen of her family and neighbors in India during her visits to India.
1. We are glad to have you on NaariSakhi, tell us something about yourself?
I am a food and travel writer. I love to try new things, experience new tastes and discover possibilities!
2.You have strong academic background in technology, what made you move from technology to cooking, writing and publishing?
I had a very close friend who passed away suddenly. I remember her death make me look inwards and really question what I was doing with my life. I felt that I had to move to something that would leave a legacy behind for my kids. I had to something I loved. I always had a passion for writing. When the time came for me to make a decision about what I really wanted from my life, writing won! As they say write about what you love and so I started writing about food, kids, traveling and more
3. What inspired you to become a writer?
I have always loved reading and telling stories. I find being a writer is such a great way to connect with people.
4. How do you balance between your family life and career?
It is hard no doubt. It is a lot better now that I own my own business. When I was with a big six consulting firm, I had no control over my life. I travelled all the time and worked endless hours. Now, I do the work on my own schedule. There is never any doubt on priorities – my family comes first and then everything else.
5. Tell us something about your upcoming book “Modern Spice”
We are a new generation. We are a generation that has a lot of style and although we love traditions, we are not bound by them. Modern Spice is a celebration of the modern Indian. It is a collection of modern Indian-inspired recipes (Lychee Martini’s and Pomegranate Shrimp!) and also a lot of my food essays that focus on food and its relationship to our lives.
6. What advice would you give to the women, who want to be a successful entrepreneur?
Persistence is the only key to success. It is not talent, not luck, not wealth but persistence. You have to keep going even when times are hard
